In 1925, Harry's biological mother died of unknown causes and Mario adopted his two nephews, Robert and Mario Jr. His father eventually found work as a stonemason in South Philadelphia. His father, Mario, left Philadelphia to search for a job working in the coal mines in West Virginia and joined him in 1913. A spill of red sauce complements the cutlet. He then breads and fries it, and rolls it up inside a length of sturdy Italian bread. The chef pounds a piece of skirt steak until it nearly is as thin as a potato chip. But the breaded steak sandwich stakes out its own place. It is similar in girth to the city’s widely-beloved Italian beef sandwich. The breaded steak sandwich is a South Side Chicago street food little known beyond the Bridgeport neighborhood.
